A day at Little Bay

First things first, coffee. Or tea. Or hot chocolate. Our always hot, always cold beverage station and coffee station will get folks out on the deck for a warm drink and a little breakfast. Here in the cooler months? Cozy up by the gas log fireplace in the dining room. Maybe your earliest riser will have slipped off to Out of the Oven Bakery to pick up some morning goodies.

Now it's time for the great outdoors. That's why you came, right? If you’re here in fall or spring we've got waterfront hammocks, lawn games like bocce ball and outdoor Jenga and badminton, 4 acres of land, and a fire pit for cozying up on the heated porch and gazing out at the bay.

Speaking of that beautiful bay! We searched long and hard for a house that had exactly what we wanted in a shoreline. A long private beach. Check. Swimmable for all. Check. Piece of cake to roll out our kayaks (4) and stand up paddle boards (2). Check. And I don’t know about you, but I like the option of both sun and shade. Our tall pines by the beach give you both. 14 beach chairs, lots of floats and life vests are provided. If you have a small boat or jetski you can bring it and launch from our shore. If you have a larger craft and are looking for a marina we have two close by. Windmill Point Marina is 6 minutes away and Rappahannock River Yacht Club is 12 minutes away. If you plan to kayak, the Little Oyster Creek water trail is just to our right.

Our family could lounge for days, but we know that’s not for everyone. Use Little Bay House as your home base and see what this part of Virginia has to offer. Maybe you’re attending a wedding at the Tides Inn, this is a great home to stay in when you come to town. Three adorable small towns are within minutes of the house: White Stone, Irvington and Kilmarnock. And hey, you could go further. Williamsburg and Busch Gardens are an hour and fifteen minute drive and Richmond is an hour and a half. Hughlett Point Natural Preserve is beautiful to explore and is a 20 minute drive. Shop for antiques at Kilmarnock Antique Gallery and continue down Main Street from there. Grab yourself a burger and a shake at NN Burger

Whatever your crew has done during the day, we know you’re getting hungry now. Clean yourselves up in the outdoor shower – three cheers to no sand in the house! – and mix up a cocktail.

If cooking at home is your jam we’ve got you covered – a fully stocked kitchen, including fancy blender and an extra large stock pot for steaming crabs. White Stone Oyster Company is right down the road (202 Antirap Road, 804-296-6256). Drop by and pick up oysters harvested today, pop them on the charcoal grill and wait for them to open (if you didn’t know how to shuck an oyster, now you do). For crabs and other seafood we love Miss Mary Seafood. Stop in and buy what’s fresh that day. Ask and they’ll tell you how they like to prepare it. Crab picking and oyster shucking supplies are stocked at the house.

For dining out, if you don’t know Merroir – Rappahannock Oyster Company’s original spot – you should! Less than 15 minutes away you’ll dine outdoors on small plate seafood dishes and sip Rosé on tap while the sun goes down. Super casual, kids can run around and busy themselves. An up to date list of all the spots we love is in the Directory section of this site.

Whether you've eaten at home or gone out, we recommend wrapping up your day with s’mores by the fire pit or a movie on the fits-the-whole-gang sectional sofa.

G'nite, and enjoy tomorrow,

Meg
